The Name and Logo of Miami Color Theory

In 2002, I was interviewed by the Miami New Times regarding my color photography (back then mostly on 35mm slide film). I described South Florida colors best by something I once overheard a Londoner explaining as he left Miami to go back home: “I have to leave this Technicolor world for my black-and-white one.”

I love Miami – the colors, the light, the warmth, the beauty, and since the inaugural Art Basel Miami Beach in 2002, also the art scene.

The round Miami Color Theory logo, a shape created for the logo circle of Instagram, has a 12-color wheel, and is based on one of the earliest known color wheels from the 1708 artist’s manual “Traité de la peinture en mignature,” by Claude Boutet.

In the two color wheels image above, the left circle’s seven colors include violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, scarlet, and crimson. The right circle adds the additional colors of golden yellow, red, purple, sea green and yellow-green. The Miami Color Theory 12-color logo also features a graphic M subtly made of the letters M, I and A (the A is upside down). MIA is the airport code for Miami International Airport, and a well-known abbreviation for Miami. Coincidentally, my daughter’s name is Mia.
